Physiotherapy
Unfortunately many dogs suffer from conditions that affect their joints, muscles and ligaments (musculo-skeletal problems eg. arthritis, cruciate rupture), and ones that affect their nerves and spinal cord (neurological problems eg. disc prolapse, hindquarter paralysis). Physiotherapy is an essential part of the overall treatment and management of these conditions, ensuring your dog regains as much of their previous function as possible.
Physiotherapy can help by addressing pain, joint stiffness, muscle weakness, balance and coordination. All these are a feature (to a greater or lesser extent) of the physical conditions which dogs are affected by. The overall aim is to get your dog back to their optimal level of mobility and function, working alongside hydrotherapy and veterinary care.
There are a range of treatments that physiotherapy can offer including hands-on techniques, electrotherapy (such as therapeutic ultrasound, muscle stimulation or TENS), and exercises that will help to strengthen and improve the way your dog moves. Physiotherapy works very well alongside Hydrotherapy as together we can optimise your dogs rehabilitation by including both water-based and land-based rehabilitation programmes.
As an ACPAT Physiotherapist (Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Animal Therapy) I am trained to provide a high-quality of service. All ACPAT physiotherapists have been human physiotherapists and then trained to specialise in treating animals. We are regulated by ACPAT and the CSP (Chartered Society of Physiotherapists) to ensure we work safely and are always up-to-date on training. We always work under veterinary referral or approval to ensure your dog receives the best care.
Kerry and Jill (Hydrotherapists) or your vet may suggest Physiotherapy would be beneficial for your dog. Equally you may feel your dog would benefit from Physiotherapy and would like to discuss it with me. I will be running clinics from York Canine Hydro and would be pleased to answer any questions you may have or meet to discuss your dog’s requirements.
Please contact Jill or Kerry at York Canine Hydro to arrange an appointment or alternatively contact me direct on 07788 937759.
